Great Moments in Opera, Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro"

!±8± Great Moments in Opera, Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro"

Puccini's opera "Gianni Schicchi" which lasts one act starts out with the death of a man whose fortune attracts many. All of them wanting to inherit as much as possible and it is with sadness and hope that they go through the recently deceased's house; looking for the will that will clarify who will receive what and how much. Lauretta for her part only wants enough money so that she and her beloved may at last get married.

It is however once the will is found that all receive a shock when they are made aware that all has been left to a convent and nothing for them. Alarmed they do not know what to do while Laureta says good bye to all hope of being happy with the man of her adoration. It is nonetheless in this despair that the idea comes to mind of calling for Lauretta's father; Gianni Schichi. It being he who though unpopular with most is thought to be the only one who can find a solution to the problem and save them from receiving nothing from a will they feel should have been more generous with them.

Gianni Schicchi however once made aware of the situation refuses to help these people, whom he sees as opportunists and little else; this being what he declares in no unclear way with the words "Al propo di quella gente niente, niente" as he crosses his arms in anger. The translation of this in to English being "concerning those people, I will do nothing, nothing" yet it is as the music is dying out along with the hopes of all that a faint sound starts to rise; almost out of the ashes of tragedy that are all about. It is heard softly, almost in the background as a pleading voice cries out "O mio babbino caro". This meaning "oh, my dear father" along with the rest of the aria which Lauretta sings to her father as she begs him to help her and her beloved get the money they will need to get married yet in all there is so much love and true passion; as lauretta's suffering is tremendous. It being clear in the message she sends to her father about how if her love would prove to be in vain she would prefer to throw herself in the river than to go on.

"O Mio Babbino Caro" is a romantic aria yet it differs from most in being a plea in the name of love from a young lady, not to the one she wishes to be with but to her father; not to ignore her adoration for the one she feels she can not live without. These sentiments being accompanied by a music which has a feeling of longing which seems will never really be fulfilled yet it implores along with the cries of lauretta; who wishes more than anything that her father give her this which to her has become everything.

Naturally, it is after hearing his daughter's supplication that Gianni Schichi agrees to do what he can so the fortune which was promised to a convent will remain with those in the room and by virtue of which his daughter will be able to be taken to wife by the man who likewise adores her. As for "O Mio Babbino Caro", it has been used outside of the opera on many an occasion; with notable cases being the film "A Room With A View" and a female figure skater who won the gold medal at the 2006 winger Olympics. This perhaps due to the music which seems to be slowly releasing hope and passion in a way resembling a figure skater in the act of gliding across not only ice but clouds.

There have been many great divas to perform "O Mio Babbino Caro" through out the years yet I would say that my favorite soprano and love of my opera life, Angela Gheorghiu is superb; specially in taking the very high note that comes almost at the very begging. It being when Lauretta is telling her father how beautiful she finds the one she sings about. As a footnote to this aria I can add that in the dialect of Toscana, "babbo" means father with the word "babbino" being its affectionate version.

How to Play Bossa Nova Guitar Chords

!±8± How to Play Bossa Nova Guitar Chords

There are many different styles of guitar playing. They can be very distinctive and use special ways of playing. For example, flamenco guitar playing employs some very unusual finger strumming methods that are unique to flamenco guitar. Bossa nova music also has its special methods and techniques. This style of music is very much main stream now and Latin music in general has structures that work in mainstream rock and pop songs.

Bossa Nova Guitar Chords
There is a whole family of guitar chords that are very much used in bossa nova music and they are called Major seventh chords. To start with a beginner should learn just three of these chords. These are C major seventh, F major seventh and A major seventh. The F and A versions are useful shapes all the way up the fretboard. When you strum them you can hear the signature sound of these chords. The extra note to make the seventh chord is the 11th. For C major seven this means adding a B note to the C chord. This is achieved by simply dropping the finger on the B string. For the A chord you add a G# and for the F chord you add an E note. This type of chord is used in other styles of music but not to such a large degree as in Bossa Nova.

Bossa Nova Guitar Plucking
There is a method of plucking and damping the guitar strings that is used extensively. This involves you plucking 4 strings and damping them to provide the rhythm. You can damp the strings early or late to add emphasis to the chord sequence. The thumb usually plucks one of the base strings and the three fingers pluck the top three strings. They are all plucked and damped in unison.

Using a Nylon String Guitar in Bossa Nova Music
You will find that nylon stringed guitars are used in bossa nova music to provide a softer feel to the backing chords. The mixture of the nylon strings with the plucking and damping described above will make your guitar playing sound authentically Latin in feel.

Introducing Andre Rieu, His Johann Strauss Orchestra and His Magnificent Sopranos

!±8± Introducing Andre Rieu, His Johann Strauss Orchestra and His Magnificent Sopranos

Andre Rieu was born on October 1, 1949, in a very old town, dating back to Roman times, called Maastricht, in the Netherlands. He was a very nimble child and started learning the violin when he was only five years old.

He continued his studies at the Conservatorium, in Maastricht and Liege's Conservatoire Royal. He was fascinated by orchestras. For three years in the 70s he studied under luminaries, such as Andre Gertler, at the Brussels Music Academy. Whilst there he won the 'Premier Prix'.

Later he formed the 'Maastricht Salon Orchestra'. The Limburg Symphony Orchestra was so impressed with young Rieu that they allowed him to appear as a solo violinist.

In 1987 one of his dreams came true and he formed the 'Johann Strauss Orchestra' with only twelve members. How it has grown! The orchestra now utilizes the first class talents of between forty and fifty musicians. Some have criticized his elaborate stage performances and sets. However the fact remains that he has done an enormous amount of good, not only to popularizes waltz music, but, also classical music in general. He also puts on a wonderful and entertaining show and brings much pleasure and happiness, wherever he and his orchestra perform. Andre earned his, well deserved title of, 'The King of Waltz'. Andre is a sincere man with much charisma who enjoys playing his violin, but also enjoys light banter with his audience, who oft times, are made to feel part of his orchestral family.

He owns and plays, two historic Stradivarius violins. One dating from 1667. The other from 1732.

The Johann Strauss Orchestra, with Andre at the tiller, have given acclaimed performances all over the globe, including Europe, the Americas, and as far away as Australia. He speaks, at least, seven languages, including Dutch, German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. His recordings and DVDs have also been received, with enthusiasm, by his world-wide family of faithful fans.

The Johann Strauss Orchestra has won many many. Gold and Platinum recordings and no less than two World Music Awards. In Holland, eight Platinum awards were also added to that growing list. He now has his own, very busy, recording studios in Maastricht, where he produces, not only DVDs and CDs of his own performances, but records for movie sound tracks, theatre musicals and other forms of music, including classical, folk and popular. Andre worked with a brother, Jean Phillipe, for some years, until Jean struck out on his own and opened his own production company.

Pierre, the younger of Andre's two sons, works with him, as his Production Manager, on a full time basis.

His wife, Marjorie has composed several pieces and these have been performed by the orchestra. One, particularly lovely piece 'Please Don't Go', was sung by Suzan Erens, Carmen Monarcha and Carla Maffioletti to critical acclaim.

In 2007, Andre also chalked up another first. He toured Australia alone, without his orchestra. He was enthusiastically received and delighted audiences with his own interpretation of their unofficial Australian National Anthem, 'Waltzing Matilda'. However, both Andre and the full orchestra will be returning to the 'Land Down Under' late in 2008, in November and December, for a full tour. Much to the delight of his legion of admirers there.

PBS, Public Broadcasting Services have transmitted many of the live performances of Andre and his Johann Strauss Orchestra, both throughout the U.K. and North America. One particularly wondrous performance was from the Piazza Della Republica, Cortona, Tuscany. A tender and deeply touching performance of Puccini's, 'O Mio Babbino Caro', sung by a beautiful, young soprano, Carmen Monarcha, from Brazil. People were moved to tears, both in the audience and watching at home. I know, because I was one of them. Carmen and the other two sopranos, Carla Maffioletti and Suzan Arens, delighted the audience with several other vocals at the concert. I recommend that this DVD be placed on your, 'Must Have', list. I guarantee you will never be be disappointed with it.

There is much more of this story to be told and I shall be writing further articles about this extraordinary performer, his orchestra and his sopranos. In the meantime, I ask you to enjoy my Squidoo lens and web site, which contains more Andre Rieu delights and even some super free videos of his performances, plus the singers. Details in the author's resource box.
